Type Locality and Naming

Songliao Basin east. The reference section is located in No.30 well in the Shulan Street exploration area, Jilin. Named by Li Yongxiao in 1962.


Lithology and Thickness

Grayish green sandstone, sandy shale, mudstone, sandy mudstone, sandy conglomerate and conglomerate, the base of which contains basalt pebbles or lignite fragments. In some areas there are coal seams or unminable coal beds. The thickness varies greatly from a few meters to more than 1000m, being generally 500m or so.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has an unconformable contact with the underlying Eocene Shulan Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary. [China Lex strat chart suggests Sunwu Fm might also overly regionally?]

Regional extent

This formation is distributed at Yongji and Shulan.

Fossils

It contains the plants Quercus miovariabilis etc., whose age is Miocene. Sporopollen include Chenopodiaceae, the grass family and Retitricolpites, whose age is Eocene-Oligocene.
